Francis William Newman was a 19th century English scholar and writer. In 1840 he became Professor of Latin in Manchester New College, a Unitarian seminary. In 1850 he published Phases of Faith, or Passages from the History of my Creed, which is a religious autobiography detailing the author's passage from Calvinism to pure theism, in which God is personal and active in the governance and organization of the world and the universe. Although this is an autobiography it is more importantly the author's journey in establishing his personal creed.
