The focus of the present study was to isolate bacteria capable of degradation of chlorpyrifos contaminated soil. MR2 which degraded 90% chlorpyrifos within 24 hr. CPD-1, CPD-4, CPD-9, CPD-15 and CPD-18 were the other microbes which degraded 70%, 71%, 66%, 80% and 83% respectively in 24 hr. All isolates were characterized by morphological, biochemical, phenotypical and molecular assays. Five highly efficient isolates were characterized by 16S rRNA sequencing. The 16s rRNA identified CPD-1, CPD-4, CPD-9 and CPD-15 as Enterobacter aerogenes, Citrobacter gillenii, Citrobacter braakii and Citrobacter murliniae respectively. Whole genome sequencing of highly efficient chlorpyrifos degrading bacterium (CPD-12) was performed in Ion Torrent and has been deposited at DDBJ/EMBL/GenBank under the accession ARYB00000000 with bioproject accession: PRJNA203096 ID: 203096.
