Pavel Pepperstein (geb. 1966, Moskau), in Russland längst als Leitfigur der jüngeren Moskauer Kunstszene anerkannt, stellt ein wichtiges Bindeglied zwischen den älteren Vertretern des Moskauer Konzeptualismus und den jungen Kunstschaffenden seines Landes dar. Sein Vater, Viktor Pivovarov, ist eine Hauptfigur dieser älteren russischen Künstlergeneration. Dem Betrachter eröffnen sich im zeichnerisch-malerischen Werk Peppersteins rätselhafte, hybride Welten. Motive aus der russischen und antiken Sagenwelt treffen auf avantgardistische Formen im Stil von El Lissitzky oder Kasimir Malewitsch, die collagenartig mit Hollywood- oder Science-Fiction-Szenen zusammengefügt werden. Dieser gewagten Mischung fügt Pepperstein ein kommentierendes Element hinzu: die Schrift.
