The frame work of this work has two research directions. In the first direction, the performance of the Passive Optical Network (PON) was evaluated under two different consideration approaches. The first approach is the single Optical Line Terminal (OLT) system, and the second approach is the multi OLT system. The second direction was the study, the design, the implementation and optimization of Al-Gehad FTTH network based on Gigabit Passive Optical Network (GPON), which is one of the Iraqi Telecommunication and Post Company (ITPC) FTTH projects in 2010 in Baghdad, through a mathematical model based on the above two approaches, which has been put under consideration according to the available information from ITPC. Cost ratio between EPON and GPON is evaluated, then it has been found that it is depends on the total bit rate available for user data in the network segments. GPON system has been optimized to analyze and evaluate the feeder, distribution and total network link cost by an optimization problem which has been formulated and solved to find the optimal capacity of Al-Gehad FTTH network links while guaranteeing the minimal throughput for each traffic flow.
