Malocclusion can occur in three planes i.e., Transverse, sagittal plane and vertical plane. In vertical plane, a condition where there is absence of vertical overlapping of the mandibular by maxillary teeth is termed as open bite. Facial disharmonies in the vertical plane, including the open bite, are great challenges to patient as well as the orthodontists. Generally, it deteriorates the facial aspect, impairs mastication and speech, subjecting the patient to uncomfortable situations. The complexity of this malocclusion is attributed to a combination of skeletal, dentoalveolar, functional and habit related factors with remarkable difficulties of treatment and the instability of the correction, depending on its severity, etiology, and the stage of treatment onset. Hence, a proper diagnosis, treatment and mechanics is necessary to achieve a functionally normal, esthetically good and stable occlusion.
