"Old Wineskins" is a continuation of the discipleship study that began with "Outrageous Christian Discipleship." What would be really radical or outrageous? A good start might be setting aside our preconceptions and personal preferences to truly follow Jesus. Jesus said that no one puts new wine into an old wineskin. The skin would be broken, and the wine would be spilled and lost. He was clearly saying that the New Covenant would not fit within the confines of the Old Covenant. But, could there be more to it than that? Could there be a lesson here for the modern church? Church tradition that isn't necessarily Scriptural may be hindering our effectiveness. Let's face it. The way we've always done it isn't working. Perhaps we should focus more on Jesus and less on tradition. This is designed to be used in a small group. There are questions at the end of each chapter as discussion starters. Jesus said, "If you continue in my word, you really are my disciples. You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free." (John 8:31-32, HCSB) Paul said, "Christ has liberated us to be free. Stand firm then and don't submit again to a yoke of slavery." (Galatians 5:1, HCSB) Are we truly free in Christ, or are we in bondage to our religion? To find freedom, it's clear that we need to continue in His Word. Many are in bondage because they don't know what the Bible says. Many teachers and leaders are repeating what they've been taught, but is it God's Word or the understanding on men? Are you ready to experience freedom in Christ?
