Ocular drug delivery is one of the most fascinating and challenging tasks facing the pharmaceutical researchers. One of the major barriers of ocular medication is to achieve and maintain a therapeutic level at the site of action for a prolonged period of time. Ophthalmic inserts are defined as sterile, thin, drug-impregnated solid or semi-solid devices placed in the cul-de-sac whose size and shape are especially designed for the ophthalmic application. These inserts are placed in the lower fornix and less frequently in the upper fornix on the cornea. They are usually made up of the polymeric vehicle containing drug and are mainly used for topical therapy.
