John Amner was an English composer of mostly sacred works, who worked at Ely Cathedral. Amner received his musical training as a chorister in the cathedral, and later held the posts of Informator Choristarum and Organist. Amner received two bachelor of music degrees, one from Oxford in 1630 and one from Cambridge ten years later. Following his degrees, Amner was ordained and became a minor canon at Ely. Often overshadowed by his late Renaissance English
contemporaries, Amners music mostly survives in his published collection Sacred Hymnes of 3, 4, 5 and 6 parts for the Voyces and Vyols. He also wrote anthems, canticles and other liturgical settings.
