Magnetic nanoparticles are widely used in biological and biomedical applications such as biomolecule purification and cell separation, magnetic resonance imaging, and biomagnetic sensing. This book presents an advanced research on fabrication, characterization and demonstration of a novel type of multilayer magnetic nanoparticles, namely synthetic antiferromagnetic nanoparticles, for biomedical applications. These nanoparticles represent a new paradigm where magnetic interlayer interactions are exploited to achieve zero magnetic remanence while their magnetic moments are well above those of common superparamagnetic nanoparticles. Unlike the chemical (or "bottom-up") synthesis of magnetic nanoparticles, a direct physical (or "top-down") fabrication is developed to enable precise control of particle morphologies, sizes, structures and properties. Synthetic magnetic nanoparticles possess many interesting properties that are highly desired in biomedical applications. This book is of value to graduate students, researchers and engineers interested in the field of multi-modal magnetic nanostructures for biomedical applications.
