These paintings are a return to the most traditional forms of art; Still life, the figure and landscape. I had spent so many years experimenting on the computer with digital art and all its' complexities, I longed for a simpler approach. I went back to the renaissance and looked at some still life works and then inevitably found my way to Morandi. After a conversation with my friend Bruce Newell(also my teacher at San Francisco State) where he was praising a show he had just seen of Diebenkorn's paintings at the DeYoung Museum, I rediscovered his work and realized how deeply impressed I was with his paintings. I also explored the other Bay area figurative painters, especially Thiebaud, not so much the thick painted impasto ones he is so famous for but also the cityscapes and landscapes. And lastly I mention how impressive (for me), is the work of David Hockney. In these paintings, by design I stayed away from all the digital techniques that are so easy to fall into. And tried to create the images in the simplest most straight forward way I could find. Happy trails, Larry Coffin Thailand 20
