-Superior... An important resource for nurses- Shanne McNamara, Vice President, British Association of Neuroscience Nurses Neuroscience Nursing is a comprehensive, practical text that reflects both the richness and the diversity of contemporary neuroscience nursing. It aims to inform the practice of neuroscience nursing through the report of current research, best available evidence, policy and education. This important new book is divided into several sections exploring anatomy and physiology of the nervous system; assessment, interpretation and management of specific problems in the neurological patient; neurological investigations and neurosurgical procedures; management of patients with intracranial disorders; and management of patients with long-term conditions. It also explores the underpinning concepts of neuroscience care, including its history and development, and legal and ethical issues. Uniquely, this text also includes patients' perspectives of living with a variety of neurological conditions. Key features:

  • The first evidence-based UK neuroscience textbook for nurses
  • Extensive full colour illustrations throughout
  • Applicable to a wide variety of settings including prevention, primary care, acute and critical care, rehabilitation and palliative care
  • Contributions from nurse specialists, nurse consultants, academics and subject experts from throughout the UK

This book would be relevant to a wide ranging audience from students, to newly qualified, to those wishing to move into neuroscience and those who work within the field requiring a good resource book for updating their knowledge or as a reference.  (Nursing Times, 8 November 2012)

"This high quality book would be an invaluable addition to a hospital unit or in a nurse′s personal library." (Doody′s, 14 October 2011)

"They are well referenced and integrate theory with daily nursing care. . . This book is worth buying for personal use or as a reference in clinical settings." (Nursing Older People, 1 October 2011)

"The clear, systematic organisation of this book will provide neuroscience nurses with detailed guidelines and rationales for care, but also will enable nurses caring for these patients to readily find specific information for the care of their patients. This book is highly recommended for nurses and other members of multidisciplinary teams caring for neuroscience patients, and an essential text for specialist neuroscience areas." (British Journal of Neuroscience Nursing, 1 September 2011)

"I have really enjoyed this book, it s given me a greater understanding of neurological conditions and the nursing management of them. It will be most helpful to me in my current and future career." (1st year nursing student, Nottingham University)

Index.

Sue Woodward is a Lecturer in Nursing and Nursing Research Fellow at the Florence Nightingale School of Nursing and Midwifery, King′s College London. She is also Editor–in–Chief of the British Journal of Neuroscience Nursing

Anne–Marie Mestecky is a Lecturer in Critical Care Nursing at the Florence Nightingale School of Nursing and Midwifery, King s College London. She is on the editorial board for the British Journal of Neuroscience Nursing, and the Pan London Neuroscience Nursing benchmark group.

Patients with neurological problems are cared for in many settings and nurses involved in neuroscience practice, education and research are located in a variety of different contexts. Neuroscience Nursing is a comprehensive, practical text that reflects both the richness and the diversity of contemporary neuroscience nursing.

This important text provides a critique of the available evidence underpinning practice, including evidence based guidelines developed by the National Institute for Clinical Excellence, and the NSF for Long Term Conditions. Each chapter contains the relevant anatomy & physiology, epidemiology, learning outcomes, assessment skills and evidence–based nursing management guidance. Divided into 8 comprehensive sections, section 1 looks at the anatomy & physiology of the nervous system. Section 2 explores the asessment, interpretation and managemetn of specific problems in the neurological patient including altered motor & sensory function, altered speech and cranial nerve dysfunction. Section 3 covers management of intracranial disorders and disease, while section 4 addresses the nursing management of long–term conditions, such as Motor Neuron Disease, Multiple sclerosis and epilepsy, management of intracranial disorders, spinal disorders, and disease of peripheral nerves. The management of head and spine trauma, and spinal disorders and disease are discussed in sections 5 & 6 and the management of disorders and the disease of peripheral nerves is covere din section 7. Finally, section 8 explores the fundamental concepts of neuroscience nursing, including legal and ethical issues, and dilemmas and challenges that nurses working in this field might face.

Aimed at student and qualified nurses working with people with neurological problems in a wide variety of settings, Neuroscience Nursing is an invaluable tool for nurses who want to keep up to date and improve their practice.
