The book aims to study the effect of solid lubricant assisted machining, using nano-crystalline graphite as lubricant and with SAE 40 oil as a carrying medium. Among the various solid lubricants present in the market, graphite is selected for experimentation due to its inherent properties of lamellar structures and which is a high temperature solid lubricant. The carrying medium SAE 40 oil is used based on the literature report stating the benefits of using mineral oils. Majority of the lubricants used are mineral oils as per the literature available. Due to the lower kinematic of SAE 40 oil, its high flowability characteristics and its availability in the open market, SAE 40 oil is selected. The work piece considered for the purpose is AISI 1040 steel, which is an unalloyed plain carbon steel. It is selected based on the machinability rating. Moreover, a lot of literature is available which shows the use of AISI 1040 steel by applying graphite as lubricant in turning operations. Experiments are conducted on AISI 1040 steel using uncoated carbide tools; to compare the effectiveness of solid lubricant assisted machining with cutting fluids under variable machining conditions.

Dr.Srikiran has obtained his B.E. degree from MITS,Gwalior and M.Tech from NIT,Warangal. He is presently working as Professor and heads Dept.of Mechanical Engineering at Lendi Institute of Engineering and Technology, Vizianagaram. His interests include machining processes, optimization techniques and manufacturing simulation.
