Mutula Grows Up is a non-fictional story about a child of Africa, who is given adult responsibilities at an early age. He becomes a caregiver for his younger brother at the age of 4 years. He experiences the death of his brother, Heri, when he has yet to experience life. He develops survival skills, without becoming fully aware that he has been thrust into an adult's world. Mutula grew up in Central Africa. His environment and experiences are unfamiliar to most of us in America. Yet, there are American citizens who can relate to the struggles of Mutula and his family. These are daily struggles to obtain food, shelter...minimal subsistence. It is the responsibility of those who are blessed with much to assist those who have less. Although Mutula's view of heaven is immature, we are refreshed by his simple desire to get closed to his deceased brother, Heri. Mutula completes this story having reached the goal of exhibiting adult behaviors, as he demonstrates maturity to the extent of caring for the family's herd of goats. At five years of age, Mutula is more mature than some adults. Let us admire his courage and tenacity.
