This study entitled Mulk Raj Anands Coolie: A study in discourse analysis is an attempt to examine the pattern of narrative discourse (novel) in general and a sample text of Indian English narrative discourse (novel) in particular. The study is laid out into six chapters. Chapter 1 deals with the reasons for undertaking this study, the aim and scope of this study, the concept of text and discourse and the model of discourse analysis. Chapter 2 deals with the concept of literary discourse situation and structures of Coolies discourse situation. Chapter 3 outlines the structure of the tenor of literary discourse and attempts to bring out the tenors of Coolies narrative discourse. Chapter 4 deals with the composition of the value picture of narrative discourse in general and makes an analysis of how the value picture of the novel is structured. Chapter 5 deals with the concept of discourse markers and attempts to bring out their value in the narrative discourse of the novel. Chapter 6 presents an overall view of the findings of this study.

Dr. Mohammad Nehal was born on January 11, 1960, in Bhagalpur (Bihar). He received his education from the Bhagalpur University (now Tilka Manjhi Bhagalpur University). He joined Sabour College, Bhagalpur University, as a Lecturer in English in 1984 and obtained his PhD in English working on stylistic studies of Mulk Raj Anand's Coolie.
