Has your child ever wondered what things are made of? Designed for grades K-5 and to be done at home or with small groups, this interactive multi-activity mini-course introduces children to the world of molecules and how different types of molecules are all around us. The mini-course includes a richly illustrated story-based lesson as well as games, activities, and projects that appeal to all types of learners. After a fun introduction to molecules through a story about Ellie the Electron and her cousin Sam, children construct their own molecule models using cutouts included in the mini-course. Children then reinforce their understanding of how molecules are formed through an electron match card game. For children who like to move around, a movement-based game then lets them become part of a molecule themselves (along with friends or stuffed animals). Finally, kids get to learn how new molecules are made through chemical reactions in a series of safe and easy experiments they can perform at home. Most materials needed to complete the mini-course can be cut from the book itself (or, if preferred, downloaded and printed using an included link). The mini-course requires only a few common household items to complete the activities: paper, scissors, tape, calcium carbonate chalk, white vinegar, string or yarn, Popsicle sticks, eggshells, and a small bowl or cup. Upon completing the mini-course, children will be provided with links to additional online resources and will earn new concept badges for their Science Tool Kit (included in the mini-course)-including molecule, electron, covalent bond, and chemical reaction.
