The genus Aeromonas comprises important human pathogens causing primary and secondary septicemia in immunocompromised patients, serious wound infections in healthy individuals and in patients undergoing medicinal leech therapy. Gastroenteritis, the most common clinical manifestation, remains controversial. The genus is made up of psychrophiles and mesophiles from soil and aquatic environments and causes different kinds of diseases to many warm and cold blooded animals. Due to the overuse of broad-spectrum antibiotics in clinical settings, agriculture, and fish hatcheries, there has been an increase in antibiotic resistance among disease-causing Aeromonas species.
