Over the last few years, the Modular Multilevel Converter (MMC) has been the topology of choice for High-Voltage direct-current (HVDC) transmission systems around the world. Transmission systems applying HVDC are multiplying in Europe and China in an unprecedent rate, due to the high power density, high efficiency, and reliability of the MMC. However, the issues regarding modeling, simulation, control, and fault-handling capability of the MMC are still not completely resolved. This book discusses solutions for the current issues faced by designers when dealing with the MMC, such as, a complete steady-state model for the MMC voltages and currents, that, in turn, gives rise to a analytical capacitor sizing method and an enhanced control strategy. In addition, the book describes in detail a simplified simulation model capable of reproducing the dynamic behavior of each submodule of the MMC. Finally, advanced topologies for the MMC, capable of solving the fault-handling capability issue while keeping high efficiency, are presented.
