The book describes a life journey, beginning with the author's childhood on an Irish farm in County Sligo in the 1930s. Conditions were harsh and comforts were few. In picturesque surroundings with images of Ireland's mythical past dotting the landscape the author learns the lessons of life. Laughter and heartbreak come with equal measure as realities dictate life's path. Early schooling did little to broaden horizons. Escape came, as it had for others through an offer which led to Higher Education and then at 18 to a Religious Life as a teaching Brother. A relatively stable, successful and happy period ensued, until a crisis led to a questioning of values learnt, disillusionment and departure from the Religious life and Ireland. Australia presented new difficulties which had to be overcome before stability, success and happiness returned.
