Data logging is the process of collecting data, usually over a long period of time. Data loggers are often used in scientific experiments and in environmental monitoring applications. Most data logging devices are nowadays computer based and are developed using microprocessors or microcontrollers. Sensors play an important role in data logging applications. Physical properties such as temperature, light, pressure, sound, humidity, and acidity can be sensed by sensors. The outputs of sensors are usually converted to the correct format and measured signals are stored by the data loggers. Data loggers are usually equipped with large internal non-volatile memories, or external memories such as flash memory cards are used. The collected data is usually read offline and analyzed on a PC using statistical packages such as the Excel spreadsheet. This book describes how a complete data logger device can be designed using PIC18 microcontrollers. The designed device is equipped with a real time clock chip, and SD card flash memory can be connected to the device for long term permanent storage of the collected data.
