Miguel Covarrubias (1904-1957) was born in Mexico City. During his lifetime he became known as an outstanding painter and caricaturist. He later found equal fame with the publication of his two main books Island of Bali and Mexico South, both of which became classics in their different areas. His knowledge of art, archaeology, ethnology and anthropology gave his work a unique profundity. For several years he was Professor of Art History in the National School of Anthropology in Mexico City.
