Augustus (63 v. Chr. - 14 n. Chr.) war der erste Kaiser Roms. Als ursprünglich dem römischen Ritterstand angehörender Adoptivsohn des 44. v. Chr. ermordeten Julius Caesar gewann er die Macht und regierte von 30 v. Chr. bis 14 n. Chr. Es gelang ihm, dem Jahrhundert der Römischen Bürgerkriege ein Ende zu setzen. Während er propagierte, die Republik stärken z wollen, war sein eigentliches Ziel, sie ungesehen in eine Monarchie - getarnt als Prinzipat - zu wandeln.
