In this paper, the mechanical characterization of the weldable joints of corten steel plates without and with coated by weldable and redoxide primer coatings, which has been used for making railway coaches in Integral coach factory, Chennai by GMAW welding process with three different parameters like current, welding speed and gas flow rate. The performances of the welded joints are tested with Tensile, Impact, Bending, Micro hardness, Micro and Macro structure examinations. Based on the tested observations the better strength of weldment is obtained with the weldable primer coatings with the tensile strength of 500 MPa, which is more than the strength of the base material. - Ultimate Tensile strength is 500 MPa for Weldable primer coated plates, which is higher than Red oxide primer coated of 446 MPa & Without coated Plates of 369 MPa. - Hardness values are almost same in the range of 190 HV to 220 HV for coated and uncoated weldments. - Impact Strength of 38 J which is decreased for the weldable primer coated plate compared to Red oxide primer coated of 90 J & Without coated Plates of 80 J.
