Present era of dentistry is focusing on conservation of natural tooth and since old ages endodontic and restorative dentistry is playing major role in restoring tooth function and esthetics. The dentist is confronted with restoration of extensively damaged teeth in routine. The damage can be because of caries, trauma or previous restorations and may involve half or more than half of the tooth structure. As the remaining tooth structure might not be sufficient enough to retain the restoration, bear masticatory forces without fracture or provide desirable function and esthetics, special concern is needed while fabricating a suitable restorative plan for such teeth. There is a need of proper management of grossly carious tooth in order to promote efficient function and prolonged survival of tooth as well as restoration, to prevent or treat pulpal disease (if any), to protect the remaining tooth structure against further loss, to provide occlusal stability and proximal contacts with adjacent teeth, to provide optimal esthetics, to promote health in the marginal periodontal tissues and to preserve and promote periapical health.
