With the recent trends in orthodontic practice to use straight arch wires, especially since the introduction of highly elastic and superelastic alloy, the use of loops is now limited in orthodontic therapy. However, advances in the field of biomechanics have shown that in certain situations a loop may be superior or advantageous to a straight archwire because it delivers the appropriate force systems for efficient tooth movement in the required direction. Given that we need a sound knowledge of such appliances, this book gives a brief insight into the biomechanics and properties of the various loops used in different aspects of orthodontic treatment.
