In the present investigation, a domestic pond named Bangshal pond in old Dhaka was studied limnologically for one year. The Bangshal pond was excavated over 189 years ago. This pond providing ample surface water for the citizenry to wash and bathe. In the present investigation 40 genera were represented in the phytoplankton communities. All these genera belonged to six algal classes. The total number of phytoplankton species recorded in the present study was 122 of which 119 species were found to be reported for Bangladesh and 3 species were found as new report Bangladesh. Class wise distribution of those species was Euglenophyceae 39, Chlorophyceae 42, Bacillariophyceae 16, Cyanophyceae 19, Cryptophyceae 5 and Dinophyceae 1. The newly reported phytoplanktons are namely Euglena pusilla Playf, Lepocinclis fusiformis fa. Lemmermanii Conr and Phacus angulatus Pochm. Pond phytoplankton showed positive correlation with air temperature, water temperature, conductivity, pH, soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP), soluble reactive silicate (SRS), secchi depth, dissolved oxygen (DO), nitrate-nitrogen (NO3-N) and phaeopigment and chlorophyll-a.
