The area of a design solution for a small device and an educational tool used without the direct guidance of a teacher is a relatively unknown territory, only explored in the last 5-10 years. Todays mobile devices - smart mobile phones and PDAs have a processing capacity comparable to the personal computers from 10 years ago. These devices have been mainly explored for the purposes of communication and socialising, whereas their enormous potential in the educational field have not yet been sufficiently addressed. There is a possibility to use mobile devices in almost any educational field, teaching virtually any subject, but in the scope of this project the attention is focused on the teaching and learning of a foreign language with the help of a handheld tool, i.e. the smart mobile phone.

Olsan, David Hand held devices and their use for autonomous learning are thoroughly looked at in this work. Many of us are striving to gain more value from our free time in the terms of education, self-study or just to be kept occupied in those empty moments while traveling on public transport or waiting in the office, whilst we now have a wonderful option to make full use of our time: learn with the help our tiny cell-phone.
