Lavandula stoechas: Promoting treatment for pulmonary fibrosis

Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis is a chronic, progressive disease characterized by proliferation and differentiation of fibroblasts into myofibroblasts, leading to collagen deposition in interstitial tissue and consequent respiratory failure. The aim of this research was to evaluate the effect of a Lavandula stoechas (Lavender) extract on bleomycin (BLM)-induced pulmonary fibrosis in Wistar rats.Our phytochemical results show that lavender extract has significant antioxidant activity and a high content of phenolic compounds. An anatomopathological study revealed a reduction in fibrosis score in the lavandula stoechas-treated groups, with an improvement in lung architecture. Our results also showed normalization of oxidative stress markers and LDH levels. In conclusion, this work has shown that our Lavender extract has interesting antifibrosing and antioxidant activity with a therapeutic promoting effect against pulmonary fibrosis.
