Traditional backup methods in a home or small officeenvironment are complex and insecure. They allowmodification of the data withoutthe knowledge of the owner unless additional stepsare taken to secure a hash of the media.Additionally, if a backup is tampered with there isno way to revert to the non-tampered with state ofthe backup unless additional work has also gone intocreating multiple backups, and then there is theadditional problem of verifying all of the backupsperiodically. To solve these problems, we developedLadon, a framework for distributed backups. Ladonoperates in a peer-to-peer fashion and assumesmalicious remote peers. Ladon''s purpose is tosecurely store data across a heterogeneousenvironment of networked desktop computers. Ladonuses algebraic signatures to allow third parties toverify data without possessing a copy of the data, which prevents malicious peers from destabilizing thesystem. We have designed our system for use in mediumbandwidth environments such as home broadband DSL orcable.
