The book is both a critique of existing normative theories of secession and a study of the contemporary secessionist dispute in Indian-occupied Kashmir. It offers a comprehensive examination of the right of sub-groups to secede through an empirical study of a contemporary secessionist dispute. Previous studies have employed empirical data from a series of unrelated disputes to illustrate a point. However, there has been no sustained application of these theories to a real-world case study to see how they might play out in practice. The book also provides a new way of looking at the Kashmir dispute. Previous studies have discussed the causes behind the uprising in Kashmir against Indian authority and examined some of the legal and geo-political implications of the conflict for India and the wider region. However, there has been no examination of Kashmir's moral right to secede that employs contemporary normative theories of secession and asks what these theories tell us about Kashmir, and what the example of Kashmir might allow us to learn about these theories.
