"Poetry has served me well as a way to respond to people, places and events in the world. It is my second language," she said. She was born in Fort Wayne, Indiana in 1919 and grew up in Indiana and western New York State. She received degrees from the University of Michigan and lived in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
