Joseph A. Schumpeter (1883-1950) worked successively in Austria, Bonn and Harvard. He possessed a broad overall picture of the socio-economic process and made major contributions to economics, political philosophy and the theory of economic development. Schumpeter's main concern was to explain economic development, including future economic development. He considered that the tendency was towards static, circular-flow economies; and that the role of the entrepreneur was vital in bringing about the technological and organisational innovations necessary to preserve dynamism and wealth-creation. He also examined the roles of trade cycles and credit mechanisms in this process. In addition, he predicted that capitalism would evolve gradually into socialism over time.
