JOHN CALVINs AND THE LUO VIEWS ON SANCTIFICATION This work interprets the role of the Holy Spirit in sanctification according to John Calvin.It then responds to Calvins views from the perspective of the Luo Christians of the Africa Inland Church of Kenya. The study of Calvin focuses on the 1559 Edition Institutes. The perspectives of Calvins views explored are those of "the Christian life" and that of the Christian life as a life of "Grace and Gratitude." Calvin understood the Spirit as the power through which "the Christian life" comes to be, and the power through which such life is lived for the honor and glory to God- a life that pays Gratitude to Him. Further, he understood the Spirit as the power bringing forth transformation into the "Image of God"during the process. The study shows that the Luo understand the role of the Holy Spirit in a somewhat similar manner; an indication that Calvins teaching had a significant impact among the Luo of the Africa Inland Church of Kenya.

Jack U. Kamiruka holds a Doctoral degree in Systematic Theology from Stellenbosch University. He is a Kenyan and currently the dean of the faculty of Arts and Science at Great Lakes University of Kisumu. Dr. Kamiruka is married to Anna Nthemba and God has blessed them with two children - Grace Anyango and Emmanuel Ochieng.
