A native of Aghaloo Parish in County Tyrone in present day Northern Ireland, John Andrew Corbett was born and raised here two-hundred and five years ago. The area consists principally of small hills and rolling green valleys. After his childhood, the young Irishman decided to relocate to Canada to begin a new life because of the austere taxation and tithes policies imposed by the British Government during the early 1800s. The exact reason, however, as to why he left Ireland remains unclear. At any rate, John Corbett arrived in Canada in 1831-32 and settled at or near Tecumseth Township, Simcoe County, Ontario. He would meet and later marry Jane Mays, the eldest daughter of Edward Mays, a veteran of the British Army. John Corbett would later purchase 47 acres of farmland in King Township in York County which was a very short distance from his father-in-law and his family. There he and Jane had eight children. Later the Corbett family relocated to Garafraxa Township which today where the farm stands is part of West Garafraxa Township. John and Jane Corbett would have their ninth and final child on their farm in Garafraxa Township. Corbett as well as being a farmer, was said to be the chairman of the first school board at Green Settlement when it was organized in 1854. The Green Settlement was the area where Corbett and his family resided. John Corbett can be considered an early pioneer of King and Garafraxa Townships in Upper Canada. This then is the narrative of the life and times of John Andrew Corbett.
