Blaeu, JoanJoan Blaeu (1596-1673) war der Sohn von Willem Blaeu und ein führender niederländischer Kartograph. 1620 wurde er Doktor des Rechts und trat der Werkstatt seines Vaters bei; 1635 veröffentlichten sie gemeinsam den zweibändigen Novus Atlas. Nach dem Tod des Vaters übernahm Joan mit seinem Bruder Cornelius die Werkstatt, wurde offizieller Kartograph der Holländisch-Ostindischen Kompanie und veröffentlichte um 1649 eine Sammlung niederländischer Stadtpläne unter dem Titel Tooneel der Steeden (Theater der Städte). 1654 gab er seinen ersten Atlas über Schottland heraus, 1662 erschien sein Atlas in elf Bänden, bekannt als Atlas Maior. Sein nächstes Projekt sollte eine Kosmologie sein, doch 1672 zerstörte ein Feuer seine Werkstatt. Joan Blaeu starb im darauf folgenden Jahr. Krogt, Peter Van derPeter van der Krogt ist der führende Experte auf dem Gebiet niederländischer Atlanten. Bereits seit 1990 arbeitet er an der Kartobibliografie der in den Niederlanden veröffentlichten Atlanten, die Koeman's Atlantes Neerlandici. Er ist Jansonius-Kurator der Abteilung Special Collections an der Universität Amsterdam und forscht auf dem Gebiet der Geschichte der Kartographie an der Universität Utrecht.
