Indeed, Carter shocked the state of Georgia and the entire country by calling for an end to racial discrimination in 1971, thus launching his national political career.

He is the author of Ellen Glasgow and the Woman Within (1972), and co-author of Christopher Gadsden and the American Revolution (1982) and Confederate Colonel and Cherokee Chief: The Life of William Holland Thomas (1990). He also served as off-camera consultant and on-camera commentator for the American Experience Documentary on the life of Jimmy Carter (2002).
