This book, a novel, was written (and originally also illustrated) as a birthday present, intended to be one that money can't buy, a present for a 14 year-old, then about to turn 15, which, viewed from today's perspective, was quite a while ago. Yesteryear's young teen has since become an adult; and with her express permission this tale of Jane's adventures in a grand game played across expanses of time and space is hereby made accessible to whoever might be interested in reading them. In terms of genre best described as science fantasy, this narrative recalls a day in the life of a 14-year old girl and her younger brother. The story also enlists onto its stage a whole host of actors from places as remote as the Southern Ocean, and times as removed as the Stone Age. The novel was written so that it might interest someone between 14 and 18; and this "someone" comes with some caveats - here they are: Jane has something of the poetess Edna St. Vincent Millay, and Simon may be looking to John Stuart Mill as his guiding star. It is possible - this is what the book suggests - to be not only bright, but also really well-educated, and, despite youth, to stand your ground, no matter whether your background has or lacks significance.
