A key personality in Czech modern art, Jan Koblasa works in diverse media, including sculpture, painting, drawing, and printmaking, and he also makes costumes for the stage and screen, writes literature, and composes music. Following the Russian occupation in 1968, he left his home nation and has spent most of his life as an "emigre "in Germany.
Nearly expelled from the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague for presenting a nude as his final project in the 1950s, he went on to become one of the main representatives of Czech postwar art. He later became a professor of sculpture in Kiel, Germany.
