The research presented here sought to understand the school as a space that contributes to students experiencing art as a field of socially constituted human knowledge and practices. Art has been a mandatory subject in all elementary and high schools in Brazil since 1971, when Federal Law 5692, on Guidelines and Bases for Education, was enacted. We know, however, that art education still faces difficulties and is far from being understood and accepted as an intrinsic and necessary part of school life. Contrary to this reality, we want to defend that art is essential in the school environment, that it is part of human culture, made for everyone and, above all, that it can be made by everyone. In this context, we believe that formal education has unparalleled potential for expanding access, understanding, and inclusion of citizens in the universe of Art.
