The aim of this volume is to provide an overview ofthe life experience and culture of female IrishTravellers in Ireland, with special consideration totheir experience in Northern Ireland. The IrishTravelling community are an indigenous minoritygroup. Traditionally a nomadic community Travellershave been marginalised and discriminated against withnew pluralistic initiatives at interculturalismfailing to moderate Irish society s perception of thecommunity. The author has made special note of thetraditional female Traveller economy, theirdoor-step-exchanges which have displayed an agencyand skill historically invalidated. Other aspectsconsidered include recent changes to Travellernomadism, anti-Traveller racism, health, education,marriage and Traveller faith. Frequently theTravelling community has been used in literature andart as symbolic vehicles, this volume considers theIrish and Colonial Constructs of Traveller Culturefocusing on fine artists such Northern painter BasilBlackshaw and recent depictions of Travellers in films.

Andrea Redmond is a native of Prince Edward Island, Canada, who
has lived in Northern Ireland for 20 years. She has worked
in the community sector in Belfast and Derry as a women s worker,
a community activist
and artist. The mother of three she is presently
completing her PHD with a focus on the cultural representation of
the Travelling people.
