The present study was undertaken to evaluate the antimicrobial effects i.e., antifungal and antibacterial activity of common aquatic plant Gul-e-bakaoli Eichhornia crassipes were investigated. The crude extracts of powdered plant material of all parts of the plant were obtained in the various polar and non-polar solvents viz: petroleum ether, methanol, chloroform and aqueous extract and filter it out. Effective inhibition by methanol against fungal and bacterial growth was calculated by statistical analysis of ANOVA and Duncan s multiple test analysis (DMRT). The percentage yield of aqueous extract showed more growth of fungi Aspergillus niger and bacteria Staphylococcus aureus. As water inhibit microbial growth to a lesser extent when compared with plant extract in organic solvents. So Eichhornia crassipes is an antimicrobial aquatic plant and that is why it can grow effectively in all types of fresh water.
