This research investigates and develops spatial analysis methods and tools for land-use suitability analysis, land-use change modeling, and effects of dynamic feedbacks between land-use change and hydrology. Model representations of the interaction between land-use change and water resources show that changes in land-use influence hydrologic responses. This is especially pronounced during high- and low-flow seasons. Hydrologic processes and water resources availability also influence land-use suitability and hence land-use change responses. Accounting for the dynamic feedback between land-use and hydrology improves knowledge that can better inform integrated natural resources management.

Seleshi Getahun Yalew was born in Dessie, Ethiopia, in 1981. He obtained his Bachelor’s degree in 2005 from Addis Ababa University in Information Systems after which he served as assistant lecturer in the Department of Computer Science at Haramaya University, Ethiopia, until 2008. From 2008-2010, he followed the MSc programme in Water Science and Engineering, specializing in Hydroinformatics and Water Management, at UNESCO-IHE Institute for Water Education in Delft, The Netherlands. He joined the department of Integrated Water Systems and Water Governance at the same Institute in 2011 as a PhD fellow. Seleshiis currently a PostDoc researcher at the Copernicus Institute of Sustainable Development of Utrecht University, The Netherlands. He is also a guest researcher of the Water Systems and Global Change Group of Wageningen University. His current research focuses on climate impacts on the global potential of renewable energy, particularly in the context of integrated assessment modeling.
