Over several decades, the quality of libraries has been described in terms of both the quality and quantity of their collections. Thus collection development is both the strength and the bane of libraries and the common language of librarians.The indices, including the size, types, physical quality, scope, currency, and relevance of Library and Information Science publications, especially those written by librarians, and the extent of availability of those publications in selected academic libraries in Nigeria has continued to be a subject of debate among librarians and faculty. This work was carried out to determine the extent of the quality and quantity of these publications within a ten year period (2002 - 20012), and also measure the extent of the availability of the publications in the selected libraries. The study presents a detailed research report of the indices of the relevant publications, in relationship with the extent of their availability in the selected libraries.

Dr. Chinyere A. Okezie is from Abia State, Nigeria. A graduate of Imo and Abia States Universities, where she obtained the Bachelors and Masters degrees in Library and Information Science. She also holds Doctor of Philosophy degree from the University of Uyo, Nigeria. She is a Senior Librarian with the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike.
