This book offers a non-Western feminist alternative to Euro-centric and masculinist IR. Drawing on Daoist dialectics, the stories of "Sihar & Shenya" aim to redress the hegemony of world politics by completing the IR story.

Written with students of IR and world politics in mind, this book offers a postcolonial bridge. Following an academic introduction, Ling moves from traditional scholarship to three interlocking fables:

Book I shows what an alternative world could look and feel like.

Book II draws on the traditional Chinese notion of the five movements ("wu xing") fire, metal, earth, wood, and water to illustrate iconic elements of IR power, wealth, security, love, and knowledge. Together, Books I and II show how these can change with circumstance and context.

Epilogue/Introduction brings the reader back into the contemporary Western world with PhD student Wanda. Disturbed by her class on IR theory, she seeks another perspective and stumbles, by chance, on "Sihar & Shenya."

L.H.M. Ling is Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs at the New School for Public Engagement (NSPE) and Associate Professor of International Affairs, The New School. She is also author of The Dao of World Politics: Towards a Post-Westphalian, Worldist International Relations (Routledge, 2014).
