The Author: Howard Isham, Professor Emeritus at San Francisco State University, taught in the interdisciplinary Department of Humanties for twenty-five years. He was a music major at Pomona College until his senior year was interrupted by World War II, during which he served at sea in the U.S. Naval Reserve. His graduate degrees include an M.A. in Musicology from Columbia University, an M.F.A. in Music History from Princeton University, and a Ph.D. in European History from Columbia University.
