ThisbookistheresultoftheprocessingoftheexcavationdataandofthepotterycomingfromthestratigraphyunderneaththecathedralofSiena.ThesurveyswereconductedbetweenAugust2000andMay2003bytheDepartmentofArchaeologyandHistoryofArtsoftheUniversityofSiena, withthescientificcoordinationofProf.RiccardoFrancovichandProf.MarcoValentiandthecollaborationoftheOperadelDuomodiSiena. TheultimategoalistotraceaviewofthesettlementtypesandeconomicframeworkthathasaffectedthehilloftheCathedralfromtheClassicalagetothelateMiddleAges, combiningstratigraphicdataandthestudyofmaterials.Thelimitedplanimetricextensionoftheexcavations(oftenphysiologicaltourbancontexts)didnotallowaninvestigationinopenarea, sothefindingshaveoftenbeencomparedwiththosecomingfromthedepositsinvestigatedintheimmediatevicinity, bothinfrontandbelowtheSantaMariadellaScala, inordertoobtainamorecompleteandarticulatedperspectiveonadiachroniccontext. Thestratigraphyisdevelopedoveratimespanrangingfromthe7thcenturyBCuntilthe20thcenturyAD, unearthingaverystructuredsequencethatrepresentsasignificantviewinunderstandingtheevolutionarydynamicsoftheurbanfabricofSiena: inthisregard, itisimportanttoemphasizethefactthatthechronologicaljunctiononwhichmostattentionisfocusedonisbetweentheAugustianAgeandtheendofthe14thcentury, sincethesurveyrevealedthatthearchaeologicaldepositisbetterpreservedinthetimeperiodbetweenthetwophasesmentionedaboveand, asaresult, therestitutionofceramicshasbeenmorecomplete.Thesettlement/economicdynamicsdevelopedoverthisextendedperiodindifferentwaysandthisiswhatwearegoingtoanalyse: thegoalistodevelopadialoguebetweenstratigraphicdepositandmaterialculture, withtheaimofunderstandingtheevolutionofanurbanreality, especiallyinthosephasesthatledtothecrisisofthe"classical"cityanditsconsequenttransformationandreconfigurationbetweenLateAntiquityandtheEarlyMiddleAges."
