Dr. Amaresh Chakrabarti is a Professor of Engineering Design at Centre for Product Design and Manufacturing at Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore. He has a BE in Mechanical Engineering from University of Calcutta, India, ME in Mechanical Systems Design from Indian Institute of Science and a PhD in Engineering Design from University of Cambridge, UK. After PhD, he led for ten years the Design Synthesis team at the EPSRC Centre for Excellence Engineering Design Centre at University of Cambridge, before joining IISc. He founded IDeaS Lab – the first laboratory in India for research into design creativity, sustainability and innovation. He has authored/edited 9 books, published over 250 articles and has 8 patents granted/pending. He is on the Advisory Board of Design Society, UK; a Member of the CII National Committee on Design, India; Member of the Jury for India Design Mark; and an Honorary Fellow of the Institution of Engineering Designers.
Dr. Raghu V. Prakash is a Professor of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology Madras, India, specialized in the areas of fatigue, fracture of materials, structural integrity assessment and remaining life prediction of critical components used in aircraft, automotive, power-plant and process industries and new product design. He has more than 25 years of professional experience in the field of fatigue and fracture with hands-on experience in handling industrial problems relating to life prediction. He is a voting rights member of ASTM International (technical committees, D-30, E-08 and E-28) since the 1990s. He was a Visiting Scientist/Professor at the National Taiwan University, Taipei, ROC, during 2003–2004; Scientist at National Aerospace Laboratories, Bangalore, India (1993–1998); and Technical Director, BiSS Research, Bangalore, India (1998–2003), prior to joining academics. He has published more than 100 journal and conference papers and edited a book on infrared thermography.
This book showcases over 100 cutting-edge research papers from the 4th International Conference on Research into Design (ICoRD’13) – the largest in India in this area – written by eminent researchers from over 20 countries, on the design process, methods and tools, for supporting global product development (GPD). The special features of the book are the variety of insights into the GPD process, and the host of methods and tools at the cutting edge of all major areas of design research for its support. The main benefit of this book for researchers in engineering design and GPD are access to the latest quality research in this area; for practitioners and educators, it is exposure to an empirically validated suite of methods and tools that can be taught and practiced.
