They often have sensationalist styles and read like propaganda for the "War on Terror" or apologetics for the global jihad. But few books have examined both sides of the conflict from a more neutral point of view, and sought to get at the deeper roots of the conflict. What exactly are the ideas, agendas and power structures of the Westernized world that the Islamists object to, and vice versa? Who are the main players driving the war? What are their histories, myths and metaphysical beliefs? What strategies and tactics are they using to achieve victory? This is not a "blame the West first" book of equivocations and apologetics; nor is it an "Islamophobic" screed about the evils of Islamic civilization; nor is it a book of Islamist propaganda. Rather, it is a calm inquiry into the deep power structures and ideologies that animate the militants on both sides, which I hope will give the reader a perspective they haven't encountered before. One thing I do know is this: in every conflict there are propagandists posing as objective analysts, and two sides to every story.
