This book discusses current evidence on human viruses and provides an extensive coverage of newly emerged viruses and current strategies for treatment. Offering a new perspective in view of the re-emergence of Ebola in African countries and Dengue in India and Pakistan, the contents include chapters on emergence, pathogenicity, epidemiology and vaccine uptake.
Human Viruses: Diseases, Treatments and Vaccines: The New Insights discusses a range of viruses from the most common such as Influenza and Hepatitis to Zika, Poliomyelitis and Chikungunya among many others. It is authored by a team of experts on viral disease and will be of immense use to virologists, public health experts and clinicians.
Phages as an alternative to antibiotics.- Prevention of Dengue virus infection.- War against Respiratory Syncytial virus.- Global outbreak of Ebola virus disease and strategy to control.- A Polio virus eradication.- Influenza associated thrombotic microangiopathies.- Hepatitis delta: virological and clinical aspects.- Papilloma virus, its molecular pathway and targets.- Human metapneumovirus.- Human fatality by Zika and Chikungunya virus co-infection with prolonged viremia and viruria.- Viral peptide and membrane fusion.- Crimean Congo hemorrhagic fever – an up date.- Zika – a neutropic virus.- Ebola from emergence to epidemic.- Crimean Congo hemorrhagic fever.- Introduction of Epstein Barr virus and lymphoma.- Hepatitis B virus.- Global spread of hemorrhagic fever viruses.- Latent interferon alpha B2 treatment for hepatitis C virus.- vaccine against Crimean Congo Fever virus.- Alpha herpes virus: brief introduction and pathogenecity.- E protein inhibitor or methyl transferase inhibitor of Dengue virus.- Dengue fever again in Pakistan.- Prevalence of Epstein-Barr virus genotypes.- Future use of geospatial techniques.....analysis of Dengue virus.- Management and treatment of Dengue and Chikungunya – natural products to the rescue.- Crimean Congo fever in WHO Eastern Mediterranean region.- Dengue virus infection of primary human smooth muscle cells.- Temperature dependent transmission of potential model for Chikungunya in India.- Immune checkpoints as immune system regulators and potential biomarkers in HIV-1 infection.- The Rabies virus L protein catalyzes mRNA capping with GDP polyribonucleotidyltransferase activity.- Impact of genome changes on virulence of Enterovirus 71.- Acquired auditory neuropathy spectrum disorder after the attack of Chikungunya.- Review on the antagonist Ebola: a prophylactic approach.- Hijacking the host immune cells by Dengue virus.- Pandemic influenza preparedness in the WHO African regions.- The genetics of post-polio syndrome – an overview.- Zika virus disease in India.- Merkel cell Polyoma virus responsible for Merkel cell carcinoma.- Fitness differences of hepatitis virus genotype D and F.- HCV inhibitors: significance of non-structural polyprotein.- Duel threat: clinical concerns in HIV-HBV-co-infection.- Deciphering emerging Zika and Dengue viral epidemics: implications for global maternal-child health burden.- From Dengue to Zika: the wide spread of mosquito-borne arboviruses.- Causes of high polio vaccine dropout among Pakistani children.
SHAMIM I AHMAD after obtaining his Master’s degree in Botany from Patna University, India and his Ph.D. in Molecular Genetics from Leicester University, England, in 1972 he joined Nottingham Trent University as grade-1 Lecturer and subsequently promoted to Senior Lecturer post. Here, after serving for 35 years, he took an early retirement although continuing delivering certain lectures. His research interest culminated in collaboration and visits to the University of Missouri, Columbia, USA; University of Osaka, Japan; University of Copenhagen, Denmark; Institute of Genetics and Industrial Microorganisms, Moscow, Russia; Academic Institute of Photographic Chemistry, Beijing, China; University of Leiden, Holland; Imperial Chemical Industry, Bellingham, UK; CNRS (Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique) Gif-Sur-Yvette, France; PHLS (Public Health Laboratory Services), Salisbury, England, and University of Manila, Philippines. Also has presented a number of oral presentations in international meetings and symposia. His active research expanded for over 3 decades and carried out in different areas of molecular biology/genetics including thymineless death in bacteria, genetic control of nucleotide catabolism, development of anti-AIDs drug, control of microbial infection of burns, phages of thermophilic bacteria, and microbial flora of Chernobyl after the accident at its nuclear power station. His continuing umbrella research is on DNA damage, repair and mutagenesis and UV photoreaction of biological and non-biological compounds producing reactive oxygen species: implications on human health. His latest popular publication is “5-fluorouracil in combination with deoxyribonucleosides and deoxyribose as possible therapeutic options for the coronavirus, COVID-19 infection”. He is the believer that the phage therapy remains as an alternative to the future treatment of bacterial infections, especially those developing resistant to multiple antibiotics.
In 2003, he received a prestigious “Asian Jewel Award” in UK for “Excellence in Education”. His long time ambition to produce medical books started in 2007 and since then he has published books on: Molecular mechanisms of Fanconi Anaemia; Molecular Mechanisms of Xeroderma Pigmentosum; Molecular Mechanisms of Cockayne Syndrome; Molecular Mechanisms of Ataxia Telangiectasia; Diseases of DNA repair; Neurodegenerative diseases; Diabetes: an Old Disease a New Insight; Obesity: a Practical Guide; Thyroid: Basic Science and Clinical Practice; Ultraviolet light in Human Health, diseases and environment; Diabetes: A comprehensive Treatise for Patients and Caregivers; Reactive Oxygen Species in Biology and Human Health; Aging: Exploring a Complex Phenomenon, and Handbook of mitochondrial dysfunction. Springer Publication and Taylor and Francis, CRC Press, have published most books.
