Rubber compounding is an art as well as a science. The art of rubber compounding is to achieve the best trade-offs in properties and to meet product performance requirements at acceptable production costs. The purpose of this book is to provide various experimental ideas for developing better compounds and solving technical problems.

This second edition includes more than 1800 experimental ideas to improve specific rubber properties. Many of the additional ideas are a result of an extensive review of recent journal articles and conference presentations from rubber societies throughout the world. Other ideas are the result of 18 renowned industrial experts who compiled a large number of diverse experimental suggestions to enhance specific compound properties.

Rubber compounding is a very complex endeavor. There are many interactions and many ways to achieve the target properties and economic goals while maintaining an acceptable trade-off for these characteristics. This book is dedicated to providing the reader with various experimental ideas which may guide him or her to developing better compounds and solving technical problems.§In a combined effort, 20 reknown industrial esperts compiled a large number of diverse experimental suggestions for enhancing a specific compound property. By reviewing the suggestions in this book, the compounder may develop a better "feel" for how to best achieve a compromise or trade-off with compound properties when developing new or improving tested rubber recipes. §Contents: §- Introduction§- Optimizing Cured Physical Properties§- Improving Degradation Resistance for Cured Rubber Compounds§- Optimizing Measurable Processability Properties§- Minimizing Adverse Processing Attributes§- How to Obtain Better Property Trade-Offs§- Compatibility for Blends of Elastomers as Part of Vulcanizable Compounds§- Typical Cure Packages for Compounds Based on Different Elastomer Base

John Dick has over 40 years of experience in the rubber industry. He was with BF Goodrich and later Uniroyal Goodrich Tire Co. as a section manager and development scientist in R & D until 1991, when he joined Monsanto's Rubber Instruments Group (now Alpha Technologies) as a senior scientist, applications. He also teaches 10 rubber technology courses at The University of Akron and University of Wisconsin continuing education department. Mr. Dick has authored over 80 journal and magazine publications, including five books on rubber technology, which include "Rubber Technology" and "Raw Materials Supply Chain for the Rubber Industry" from Hanser Publications. He has consulted, presented technical papers, or given seminars in over 38 countries. Some of Mr. Dick's publications have been translated into eight languages.
