Industrialization in developing countries has triggered urban sprawls and indiscriminate exploitation of earth resources leading to environmental degradation and pollution. Heavy metal pollution is only a specific type of problem arising out of it. In a series of 26 papers, this issue on pollution of heavy metals such as Pb, Zn, Cd, Cu, Cr, Co, Ni, Hg etc. has been examined in some strategic sites of India, as case studies. This collection of papers can be considered to be first of its kind to present large amount of analytical data on heavy metal pollution of basic matrices such as air, water and soil in environmentally fragile locales of India and is expected to be of use to a large spectrum of students, Research workers, Environmentalists, Govt. Most importantly, the collected data here will represent base level pollution in the respective sites during the period of study. Born in 1934, K.C.Sahu is an Earth Scientist. A B.Sc (Hons) and M.Tech from Indian Institute Of Technology, Kharagpur (1960) and Ph.D. from University of Sheffield, UK (1963), he served as a Professor in IIT-Bombay and headed the Department of Earth Sciences in the Institute. He can be credited to have started Environmental Geology in India.
